Volunteer Opportunities for Mentors, Tutors & Educators

Remember that teacher in high school who took the time to get to know you, who supported you and believed in you? The one who took the time to make learning fun and didn’t mind making the effort to help you understand the lesson?

What about the coach who constantly urged you to do your best, who didn’t compare you with others on the team but held you to a standard all your own, consistently encouraging you to give 110%?

Or a colleague or friend who listened, gave advice, offered insights, freely shared resources and challenged you to be the best you could be?

Most of us can look back at our lives and identify these extraordinary people fairly easily. They are the ones behind the scenes, the unsung heroes who made a quiet difference in the way in which we view the world. They listened to our troubles, never talked down to us, treated us with respect, celebrated our victories with us and shared the burden of our defeats. They helped us learn. They believed in us, and taught us to believe in ourselves and in our limitless potential.

What better way to thank them than by volunteering to serve as a mentor, tutor or educator to somebody else? Someone who needs a little extra help. Someone who needs a little extra hope.

Each January, the Volunteer Center Serving Howard County updates and releases a publication called Volunteer Opportunities for Mentors, Tutors and Educators in celebration of National Mentoring Month. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to read and learn about volunteer opportunities with 20 nonprofit and governmental agencies in and around Howard County. And we hope that you’ll discover the perfect opportunity to become the world to somebody as a volunteer.
