County Council member Mary Kay Sigaty of District 4 will file for re-election Monday, June 21, on Columbia’s 43rd birthday.

“This is Columbia’s first birthday since the County Council unanimously passed the comprehensive plan for downtown Columbia,” Sigaty pointed out. “We live in one of the greatest counties in the nation, and we are on the verge of an even more vibrant future,” she added.

The 30-year comprehensive master plan for downtown Columbia incorporates environmental restoration, workforce housing, transit, pedestrian and bicycle connectivity, and arts and culture, including a renovated Merriweather Post Pavilion, as well as retail and commercial businesses.
Sigaty’s leadership is credited with moving the planning for downtown Columbia to the forefront of public dialogue and consensus. She also led the County Council to unanimously adopt a new law for planning and revitalizing village centers.

“We are fortunate to live in a county that supports high-quality education and emphasizes planning and economic development,” Sigaty said. “Good schools and creative planning help attract new businesses and new jobs to maintain our quality of life and offer opportunities to the next generation,” she added.

A longtime community advocate, Sigaty has been active in education issues for 35 years, starting out as a teacher and most recently having served as a member of the Howard County Board of Education. Both of Sigaty’s daughters graduated from Howard County public schools.

“Ours is a diverse county,” Sigaty pointed out, “and we must balance the needs of an aging population and young families. I’ve lived in District 4 since I was a young woman. I love its past, and I love its future prospects even more. In the next four years, we can set high standards for that future and make them real.”

“We’re all concerned about the economy,” Sigaty added, “and our county government must continue to be fiscally responsible, efficient and effective in its operations and delivery of services. Getting the most out of our tax dollars is essential.”

Serving District 4 on the Council is an honor, Sigaty said. “I am proud of the work I have been able to do on behalf of my fellow citizens in Wilde Lake, Town Center, Dorsey Search, Hickory Ridge, Harper’s Choice, River Hill, Clarksville, Fulton and Highland, and I look forward to continuing these efforts.”
Sigaty has won endorsements from the Howard County Education Association (teachers' union), all four District 13 state legislators: State Senator James N. Robey and Delegates Guy Guzzone, Shane Pendergrass and Frank Turner and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.
