With the first day of school fast approaching, approximately 150 newly hired teachers attended the Howard County Public School System's New Teacher Orientation, August 18-20, at Reservoir High School. Participants included general education teachers, special educators and non-teaching staff such as counselors.
Day one of the orientation began at 8 a.m. Tuesday with an opening session followed by curriculum sessions. Teachers spent the afternoon in their schools having lunch and attending local school orientations.
On Wednesday morning, activities included additional curriculum sessions. After lunch, participants attended a mandatory session on bullying and harassment, child abuse and neglect, and appropriate teacher-student relationships.
On Thursday, the educators attended final curriculum and breakout sessions on a variety of topics ranging from classroom management to planning for the first day of school. "We're Here to Serve You" was the theme for Thursday's lunch, which was served by Superintendent Sydney Cousin and other school system officials. A fashion show during lunch emphasized the importance of professional attire. The day ended with the school system's Cultural Proficiency initiative.
By August 31, the school system will have hired approximately 200 new teachers for the 2010-2011 academic year. The new hires fill 36 new positions and over 150 vacancies created by resignations or retirements. Nearly 25 percent of the new hires are HCPSS graduates who have chosen to return to Howard County to teach.
