HOWARD COUNTY LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR TWO BOARD POSITIONS

(Columbia, MD) – The Howard County Library System (HCLS) Board of Trustees invites community residents to apply for two HCLS Board vacancies: one representing County Council District 5 (Western Howard County), the other an At-Large position.
Overseeing an educational institution that ranks among the finest in the country, the HCLS Board establishes policies, approves budgets, and ensures that HCLS fulfills its mission of delivering high-quality public education for all ages through a curriculum that comprises three pillars: Self-Directed Education, Research Assistance & Instruction, and Instructive & Enlightening Experiences.
Trustees, who serve in a voluntary capacity, are appointed to five-year terms, and may be reappointed for a consecutive term.
Selection criteria will include a candidate’s:
- Understanding of, and appreciation for, Howard County Library System’s unique role as an educational institution that delivers high-quality public education for all.
- Passion and commitment to maintaining and expanding the Library's local, regional, state, and national reputation for innovation and achievement.
- Previous board and organizational experience; strategic vision; experience in business, financial, and personnel practices; and a history of community commitment and involvement.
While Trustees should be available for a 7 pm meeting scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month, the HCLS Board typically meets five times per year.
County Council District 5 position candidates should reside in District 5, while those being nominated for the At-Large position may live anywhere in Howard County.
Following an interview process, the HCLS Board forwards its recommendations to the County Executive, who appoints Trustees subject to County Council approval.
