HCPSS Offering Free Flu Mist

The Howard County School System, in partnership with the Howard County Health Department, is offering free seasonal Flu Mist vaccine to elementary students, with parent permission. Elementary school students have been identified as the "target" population because flu is so common in elementary school-age children and this age group often spreads infection to their family and community.

Preparation Underway for the AFLAC Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon

Columbia Triathlon Association staff is hard at work in the hot August sun as they set up the Centennial Lake venues for this Sunday's AFLAC Iron Girl Columbia Triathlon. The race, in its 4th year, encompasses a .62 mile swim in Centennial Lake, a 17.5 mile bike course through Western Howard County, and a 3.4 mile run through Centennial Park. HCPSS Welcomes New Howard County Teachers

With the first day of school fast approaching, approximately 150 newly hired teachers will attend the Howard County Public School System's New Teacher Orientation, August 18-20, at Reservoir High School, 11550 Scaggsville Road in Fulton. Participants include general education teachers, special educators and non-teaching staff such as counselors.

Rec & Parks Announces Deer Management Program

The Howard County Department of Recreation & Parks has announced its fall/winter schedule of managed deer hunts. The hunts will be held in an effort to help maintain a stable, balanced white-tailed deer population in our parks where deer browsing has been shown to reduce biodiversity.

HCPSS Turns to Outside Company to Collect Bad Checks

While it may seem like a minor issue to some, processing of non-sufficient fund (NSF) checks is a time consuming and costly process for organizations and businesses. Due to the growing volume of uncollectible checks received by the Howard County Public School System, school officials have decided to use an outside company to recover returned checks in a more efficient and cost effective manner.

Virgin Mobile FreeFest Changes Library Hours

Due to the extremely large crowds and heavy traffic congestion expected for the Virgin Mobile FreeFest in Columbia's Town Center, Howard County's Central Library will be closed and East Columbia Branch open on Sunday, August 30.

High Temperature Health Alert

Howard County Health Officer Dr. Peter Beilenson has issued a Health Alert for Howard County. The alert has been issued for Monday, August 10. The high temperatures combined with high humidity will make outside temperatures feel even hotter and the heat index values to reach 105 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Dr. Beilenson also recommends restricting strenuous outdoor activities and using caution when planning any outdoor activity.

CA Offers Virgin Free Fest Tix + Free Ben & Jerry's

The Columbia Athletic Club and Columbia Gym are hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, August 10, from 1 to 7 p.m. All blood drive participants will receive one ticket to Virgin Free Fest 2009 at Merriweather Post Pavilion on August 30. HoCo Police Department Receives Coveted “Flagship Agency” Designation

The Howard County Police Department was recognized last week as a “Flagship Agency” for meeting strict standards set by the national Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Police Charge Columbia Man In Non-fatal Shooting

Howard County police have charged a Columbia man for an accidental shooting that occurred July 31 in Wilde Lake. Jamal Stevenson Strickland, 19, of no fixed address, has been charged with reckless endangerment, making false statements to police, illegal possession of a handgun and two other firearms charges.
