Twelfth Night Review

“Most wonderful!” Marriotts Ridge High School's production of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night was certainly so. Its contemporary setting and frequent pop songs made it a show an audience can sing-along to.

The play takes place in the land of Illyria (modernized into Hollywood) where ship-wrecked Viola has taken on the male persona of Cesario so that she may serve the Duke Orsino. Through her service, she falls in love with Orsino who is desperately in love with the Lady Olivia who in… Continue

"Twelfth Night" at Marriots Ridge High School

Only in a Shakespeare production can one find a woman disguised as a man wooing her lord’s beloved more successfully than he ever could, a normally upright (and even uptight) steward making advances upon his lady in yellow cross-gartered stockings, and a lively rendition of A.R. Rahman’s Jaya Ho. “If this were played upon a stage now, I could condemn it as an improbable fiction.” Wait a second good Fabian. Improbable, maybe- yet mere fiction, never! Marriots Ridge High School’s… Continue

Marriotts Ridge's Twelfth Night!

Glitz, glamour, and style are three words that epitomized Marriotts Ridge’s version of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Fabulously set in Hollywood, the characters became the rich and famous of today.

Twelfth Night begins as twin brother and sister Sebastian and Viola are shipwrecked and separated from one another. Viola washes up in Illyria and decides to disguise herself as a man and calls herself Cesario. She goes to work for Duke Orsenio, whom she falls in love with. However, Orsenio is… Continue

Twelfth Night

Who would have expected iambic pentameters in the 9-0-2-1-0? With a little help from the words of William Shakespeare, Marriotts Ridge High School’s production of “Twelfth Night” is a solid show with a fresh setting.

“Twelfth Night” has a story so complex, that it would take a character web for everything to make sense. Twins, Viola and Sebastian, are separated at sea. Viola washes ashore in Illyria, Los Angeles where she soon becomes entangled with Orsino, a duke vying for the… Continue

The Columbia Mall Wayback Machine

My wife found a hanger in our coat closet. An old one. It must have belonged to my parents.

"Oh, wow!" I said. "Yeah, Hutzlers. They were one of the original anchors at Columbia Mall, along with Hochschild Kohn." I knew this to be true, having lived my entire life in Howard County and Columbia. I could picture the store in my mind. I was absolutely certain. I was also absolutely wrong.

She posted the photo of the hanger to FaceBook, and… Continue

A Midsummer's Night Dream

Atholton’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

“The ear of man hath not seen”, but the eye of man has seen a striking display of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Performed by Atholton, directed by Nathan Rosen, Shakespeare’s green world piece came alive with 1960s style.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy about four lovers. Hermia, daughter to Egeus, is courted by an Athenian man named Demetrius of whom her father approves for marriage. Hermia,… Continue

Atholton's "A Midsummer's Night Dream" Review

The audience begins to quiet as the lights of Atholton’s auditorium dim and the curtains peal back to reveal a bare stage consisting of only about nine cast members. Thrown off by the lack of set and the thoroughly modern garb, I focus in, now made very curious as to how the director, Nathan Rosen, had decided to spin Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As it turns out Rosen chose to go with a very fun 1960’s setting, all made very clear on the emergence of the fairies, decked out in tie… Continue
