Howard County History - January 1, 2011

*A Happy New Year to all members & friends of the Howard County
Historical Society and history buffs in general!
In January 1850, the Patapsco Female Institute in Ellicott City began
publishing the /Patapsco Young Ladies' Magazine./Its director, Mrs.
Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps, wrote a poem, which she ends with sage
advice for the new year: “A 'happy New Year,' to earth's pilgrim child,
I offer not, - I deem it mockery all; -
A /better New Year/**, let us rather wish; -
And with our wishes mingle humble prayers,
For grace to live, each year as 'twere our last.”*
