Celebrate the placing of the last steel beam in Howard County Library's new Miller Branch. Join us for a Topping Out Ceremony for Howard County Library's new Charles E. Miller Branch & Historical Center
Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, Howard County Library Board of Trustees Chair Charles McLaughlin, and Howard County Library President & CEO Valerie J. Gross will offer brief remarks beginning at 9 am.
While the public is invited, this is an active construction site and guests should exercise caution.
"Topping out" is a ceremony held when the last beam is placed at the top of a building under construction. The practice of "topping out" a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian practice of placing a tree on the top of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits of their ancestors that had been displaced. The practice migrated to England with Scandinavian invaders and took root there.
