Relay For Life of Howard County at Hammond High School will take its energy and enthusiastic zest for life to the Food Court at Arundel Mills Mall on Thursday, May 12. Everyone is invited to join in the action – and we do mean action.
Participants will perform the Purple Glove Dance. The name comes from the purple gloves that dancers will wear while performing. No purple gloves, no problem - they will be provided. Participants are asked to dig through their closets to find purple clothes to wear (preferably something larger than a sock) so there is some semblance of uniformity during the dance. Purple was chosen because it is the color that stands for Relay For Life.
Prior dance experience is not needed. However, enthusiasm and a keen sense of fun are required. If you know folks who meet those criteria, bus them to the event.
There are two ways to learn the dance. One is to come and follow the lead of people who know the moves. The lead dancers will wear white survivor T-Shirts. The other is to check out Relay For Life of Howard County Facebook page where a video will show the bumps, grinds, slides, or whatever movements the dance incorporates.
Show time is 6 p.m. Please be prompt as the dance will last only about 10 minutes. Dancers must sign a registration waiver form, which will be available at the event.
To extend the evening, folks are welcome to dine and engage in retail therapy. On May 12, all restaurants in the Food Court will donate 10 percent of sales to the American Cancer Society provided people say these golden words, “American Cancer Society.” Also on May 12, Arundel Mills Mall’s Five Below and Books-a- Million will give customers 10 percent discounts if they mention those same golden words, “American Cancer Society.” Reduced coupons for the Gap and Dress Barn will be available to dance participants.
Fundraising Chairperson Kathy Protokowicz, the chief mover and shaker behind the dance, says the goals of the Purple Glove Dance are to acquaint uninitiated folks with Relay For Life and to get our Relay teams to have fun together. Relay For Life is an overnight event to celebrate cancer survivorship and raise money for the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life of Howard County at Hammond High School will be held June 3-4.
